Dark Descent was more plain and outright. Yeah, Dark Descent seemed more like a horror masterpiece than what focus and effort overwhelmingly went into art and sound design, it's clear since Soma they wanted to upgrade with aesthetics and interactions of the game but idk if it works. A good approach might be to make sure that the player doesn't get one of these animations on the first encounter with a monster in a game, so the player can let their imagination make the monsters worse than they are. Maybe for these types of animations to work there must be many animations available and enough of them so the player doesn't get tired of them. The Wraiths' animation was mostly just annoying after a while and not really scary, at the end I just wanted a skip button as soon as it played. So there was more fear of the unknown at play. But for the bigger part of Dark Descent Grunts and Brutes were just terrifying silhouettes that I really didn't want to get a closer look at. The Ghouls are clearly more terrifying than Grunts and Brutes visually. I think that this ruins the horror a bit. This meant that we very early had a very good idea what the ghouls looked like. Rebirth went with the same concept as Outlast and Alien: Isolation. These animations usually involves the monster pulling you in close and you get a very good look at the monster. Instead there's a longer animation that plays out where the monster either kills you or damages you and then throws you away. In Outlast and Alien: Isolation you can't interact with the game when you are caught or there might just be a button mashing prompt. They played and animation, you saw a blood stain on the screen and you lost health. In Dark Descent the monsters would instantly hit you as soon as they could.
